Solid wood is unique in that it never stops moving. Craftsmanship is about working within the proprties of solid wood to build a piece that will last by taking wood movement into consideration in the design.
Trying to restrict the movement of wood is what causes many woodworkers grief and disappointment. The more you prevent wood from moving by trying to force the pieces together unnaturally, the more you are faced with problems like cracking.
It is possible to build a piece of furniture entirely of solid wood, allowing the movement to occur naturally. We call this floating construction, and that is how we prefer to construct each solid piece we make.
Wood selection is also a primary focus in our manufacturing process. We select certain pieces of wood for specific aspects of each project based on their natural properties. Grain pattern, colour and width of board are all factors in determining where a particular piece of wood will end up on your project. Flowing continuous grain, book matching and wood character are also strong consideration.
To us, wood is simply the medium we use to create something beautiful that is as much artistic as it is functional. Nothing brings us more joy than being able to design one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect our clients personality and lifestyle.
We can work with any species of wood, but prefer to work with higher end selections such as:
Cherry
Walnut
Hard Maple
Mahogany
Quarter-Sawn Oak
